Irvine seeks halt to 'chequebook journalism'
Lord Irvine, the Lord Chancellor, yesterday announced the government would move to halt newspaper payments to witnesses appearing in criminal trials.
Announcing a consultation exercise on the plans, Lord Irvine said that if a newspaper was responsible for causing the collapse of a trial by publishing a prejudicial article it could be liable for the costs.
