Brown takes ownership of euro tests
Gordon Brown yesterday sought to reimpose control on the government's euro policy when he stressed that any decision on the five economic tests would be taken by him.
"I will be the person who presents the economic assessment," he told an MP who had asked whether the chancellor or the minister for Europe, Peter Hain, was in the driving seat.
The shadow chancellor, Michael Howard, warned that British membership of the single currency would have "devastating consequences" for the UK.
