Gordon Brown has lost out in a battle with the Treasury select committee and will have to appear in front of MPs to give evidence on his five tests for euro membership.

The Treasury has been trying to frustrate a Commons inquiry into the single currency assessment process - although the committee is now set to announce that it is to hold two inquiries into the euro tests.
