Blair's euro comment hits Sterling

Sterling initially fell by a third of a cent against the dollar yesterday when Tony Blair hinted to reporters that the pound's exchange rate was too high for entry into Europe's single currency.

"There is an issue about the exchange rate when you come to the decision, but that is for the future," he said.

Downing Street later sought to play down the comments.
