Hewitt pledges action on long hours

Trade and industry minister Patricia Hewitt yesterday set a five-year deadline for making "serious" progress on reducing Britain's culture of long working hours.

"We want people to have far greater choice about their working hours," she told a TUC conference.

But she rejected calls for legal limits on working hours similar to those in force in other European countries.
