Civil service move on rights for unmarried and gay partners

A legal change to be made in October will allow gay and unmarried partners of MPs and civil servants to receive the same pension rights as married couples.

However, the move will not apply to other public sector workers such as teachers or nurses, prompting accusations of hypocrisy.

"We have become used to one rule applying to MPs and an entirely different set of rules for the rest of us," said a spokeswoman for the National Union of Teachers.
