Economic tests will sway euro vote

The government's five economic tests will be crucial to a vote on UK membership of the euro, finds a poll published today.

A small majority - 40 per cent - will vote for the single currency, with 28 per cent telling pollsters from Eurotrack that a pass on the Treasury tests would clinch the issue. Asked how they would vote today, 56 per cent would say "No" and 29 per cent "Yes".

Meanwhile, an NOP poll for Barclays Capital produced a similar result with 40 per cent supporting the euro if the government said the economic tests had been met.
