The government is to conduct spot-checks on NHS waiting lists following a report which found some hospitals were deliberately manipulating data.

The National Audit Office found nine NHS hospitals had "inappropriately adjusted" their lists.

The watchdog estimated that around 6000 patients were affected by an ingrained culture of waiting list adjustment.
