Government to signal end of nuclear power industry

The government is set to announce that there will be no more subsidies or tax breaks for the UK's nuclear industry.

"There is no current case for public support for the existing generation of nuclear technology... there are, however, good grounds for taking a positive stance to keeping the nuclear option open," concludes a review by the Cabinet Office's Performance and Innovation Unit

A new a target to produce a fifth of the UK's energy requirement by 2020 from renewable sources such as wind power may generate controversy.

Homes and businesses will pay the price of the six-fold expansion of green power sources - with domestic bills increasing by six per cent and commercial costs up 12 per cent.
