Public remains opposed to euro says new survey

Fewer than one in five voters believe Britain should join the single currency, according to the latest British Social Attitudes Survey.

Amongst declared Labour and Lib Dem voters, 42 per cent say they would back joining the single currency.

The survey is seen as fresh evidence of the mountain Tony Blair has to climb before he can safely hold a referendum on euro membership.

The poll also found that public mistrust of politicians has reached an all-time high.
