The decommissioning of nuclear power plants could become the responsibility of a new public authority under plans being developed to push through the part-privatisation of British Nuclear Fuels.

The Liabilities Management Authority would take responsibility for the estimated £34 billion cost of decommissioning nuclear reactors, allowing the privatisation to take place as early as 2004.
