Wim Duisenberg, president of the European Central Bank, yesterday claimed he wanted to remain in his post for at least the next 12 months.

The statement, which virtually rules out the prospect of him stepping down halfway through his term, seems likely to revive speculation as to when he will make good the promise he made on his appointment in 1998 to retire before the end of his term.
