University standards chief resigns over cuts
The chief executive of the Quality Assurance Agency, the organisation responsible for inspecting university teaching, resigned yesterday over the scrapping of most of the higher education inspection system. John Randall said the new step, taken by the government after pressure from university vice-chancellors, meant that from next year only one course in 10 would face external scrutiny. Randall believes this is too few to promote public confidence in universities.
