The GMB is to challenge the governments flagship private finance initiative.

The union is to consult Labour and Lib Dem councils about holding local referendums on plans to build PFI hospitals under a consultation clause in the Local Government Act.

John Edmonds, the GMB general secretary, said that "the prime minister has claimed the government has a mandate from the people for the privatisation of public services. We intend to put that claim to the test".
