A leading cancer researcher, Sir Walter Bodmer, has urged the government to set up a genetic screening programme to identify those at high risk of developing bowel cancer.

Bodmer said he and fellow researchers from the Imperial Cancer Research Fund had discovered genetic variation that could increase the risk of bowel cancer by seven to eight times.
