Candidates urged to sign prison pledge
The Howard League for Penal Reform yesterday called on all general election candidates to sign a pledge that they backed a cut in the prison population, and threatened to publish the names of those refusing to sign. John Mortimer, the president of the League and creator of Rumpole of the Bailey, made it clear that he feels that Labour has "failed totally" in its prisons policy.
