Teachers who cover for staff shortages may be offered overtime payments in an attempt to end industrial action over the problem.

The offer was made by Graham Lane, chairman of the Local Government Association's education committee.

The has government also said it would hold an inquiry into the workloads of teachers if the industrial action was called off.
