Speaker Michael Martin, a lifelong teetotaller, yesterday bowed to tradition and chose a whisky to bear the name and coat of arms of the Speaker of the House of Commons.

Martin was aided in his selection of a single malt from Macallan by the all-party Scotch whisky group.

Members of the group did the tasting while the Speaker limited himself to smelling the drink.
