Meeting the cost of veterinary care
The problem of meeting veterinary fees, particularly unexpected costs, can be alleviated through pet insurance.
The RCVS Guide to Professional Conduct suggests that if an animal is covered by pet insurance, it is in the interests of both pet owner and veterinary surgeon for the extent of the cover under the policy to be confirmed before treatment takes place.
This includes any limitations on cost, or other exclusions applying to any proposed treatment.
Veterinary surgeons are advised that displaying promotional literature for a range of insurance products is prudent to avoid any implication of bias, financial advice, or brokering.
If a veterinary surgeon or their support staff receive commission should a particular policy be taken out, this fact should be disclosed. You can read this guidance here.
Some animal charities may also be able to assist with the cost of veterinary treatment in some circumstances.
In the event of a fee dispute, whether a client must pay a bill is a matter to be resolved between the parties or by the civil courts, not the RCVS.
