Statement on Animal Research
The types of research that the MND Association fund are broad, ranging from health and social care research to laboratory studies. Much of the laboratory research uses non-animal methods, such as post-mortem tissue from MND patients or immortalised cell lines. However, in a proportion of cases, where no realistic alternatives are available and only when absolutely necessary, animal tissue or live animals are used in MND research. In these cases we ensure that the institutions that we support comply with stringent Home Office guidelines; the use of animals will be tolerated only where absolutely necessary and the outcomes of the research and the potential benefits to people living with MND must be clear.
