As the world's largest maker of automobiles, we have a great responsibility - and opportunity- to be part of the solution to the world's pressing environmental issues. We are working on every front to make a difference. Going beyond compliance, going beyond our walls, going beyond conventional automotive transportation. We are putting the collective passion and force of GM's 280,000 employees to work on reinventing the automobile, and continuously reducing waste, energy and water use and emissions, both from our vehicles and our facilities.

GM has for a number of years set itself worldwide energy saving targets as part of its Corporate Responsibility principles. In 2004, both GM's global facility energy use and CO2 targets of 10% and 8% reduction respectively from 2000 baseline figures were successfully met one year ahead of schedule. For 2005-2010, GM has established new aggressive goals to reduce global facility energy use by 10% and CO2 emissions by 8%.

At GM our goal is to reduce waste as much as possible at its source and where this is not possible we aim to reuse or recycle as much as is technically and practically possible. All GM manufacturing sites worldwide have a five year target to reduce total waste by 15% from a 2000 baseline. Over the same period we are also targeting a 15% increase in recycling rates for those wastes which are not currently being recycled.
