About us

History

The General Teaching Council for England (GTC) is the independent professional body for teaching in England. It was established in September 2000.

The 1998 Teaching and Higher Education Act that created the GTC set the Council two aims:

  • to contribute to improving standards of teaching and the quality of learning; and
  • to maintain and improve standards of professional conduct among teachers, in the interests of the public.

Remit and role

The GTC has three principal functions:

  • to maintain a register of qualified teachers in England
  • to regulate the teaching profession
  • to advise the Secretary of State for Education and Skills.

GTC Members

The General Teaching Council is a unique partnership of teachers and others with an interest in education and teaching's success ranging from employers to teacher associations, parents and governors and representatives from the equality bodies.

Members are elected or appointed to the GTC in one of the following categories:

  • 25 elected teachers who are directly elected by teachers
  • 9 nominees from teacher unions/associations
  • 17 nominees from other bodies
  • 13 appointees by the Secretary of State for Education and Skills through the public appointments process.
