The Care Quality Commission is the independent regulator of health and social care in England. It replaced the Commission for Social Care Inspection, the Health Commission and Mental Health Act Commission in april 2009. The CQC's aim is to make sure better care is provided for everyone, whether that's in hospital, in care homes, in people's own homes, or elsewhere.
They regulate health and adult social care services, whether provided by the NHS, local authorities, private companies or voluntary organisations by registering and inspecting health and social care providers to ensure they are meeting essential common quality standards.

Since April 2007 Ofsted has been responsible for inspection and regulation of care for children and young people, and inspection of education and training for learners of all ages. It regulates children’s services, including children’s homes as well as adoption and fostering agencies and CAFCASS (the Children and Family Courts Advisory Service).

Skills for Care was established in 2000 to promote and provide training to those employed in adult social care and it is responsible for overall coherence of social care training and workforce planning.
