Chartered Institute of Environmental Health

The CIEH is a registered charity which exists to promote better environmental and public health. We are the professional body for environmental health practitioners (EHPs) working in the public and private sectors, with over 10,500 members across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

We are committed to ensuring that preventative public health remains at the forefront of the government agenda. With this in mind we seek to forge strategic partnerships in order to increase our influence. Improving poor health, reducing social and health inequalities and helping create fairer communities underpins our corporate vision.

We have expertise in a wide range of policy areas, including food safety, environmental protection, health and safety, better regulation, public health and private sector housing.

We are happy to provide information, evidence and policy advice to MPs, local and national government, as we do for environmental and public health practitioners, industry and other stakeholders.

The CIEH has been playing an important role in influencing key national decisions for over 150 years. Recently our long running campaigns to persuade the government to ban smoking in public places and to introduce a licensing scheme for houses in multiple occupation have resulted in important new legislation. These two measures alone will significantly improve the health and welfare of the nation.

We also produce the Journal of Environmental Health Research (JEHR) which is a peer reviewed journal featuring original research papers, review articles, technical notes and professional evaluations covering the diverse range of topics which impinge on environmental health.
