Health and education

Camden is the home to the world-famous Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, and major teaching hospitals including University College Hospital and the Royal Free Hospital. The world’s largest medical research charity, the Wellcome Trust, is also located in the borough.

Many of the campuses of the University of London are based in the heart of Bloomsbury including University College, Birkbeck College and the School of Oriental & African Studies.

The council maintains 41 primary, nine secondary and six special schools as well as a number of youth and early years centres.

Camden has five police stations in Holborn, West Hampstead, Kentish Town, Hampstead and Albany Street with 860 Police Officers, 48 Police Community Support Officers and 20 Special Constables.

In addition, the council operates a total of 16 full-time street wardens in teams covering King’s Cross and Camden Town and Bloomsbury.

Business and employment

Camden is a major employment centre, encompassing a large legal and business centre in Holborn. It has the seventh largest economy in the UK5 with an estimated 248,000 employee jobs of which 35 per cent are in business services, 11 per cent are in tourism and 23 per cent in public administration, education and health 6.

Camden is also a borough of entrepreneurs, with 2,500 new businesses registering for VAT in an average year.7
