Association for Physical Education Mission:

The Association for Physical Education [1] (afPE) is committed to being the representative organisation of choice for people and agencies delivering or supporting the delivery of physical education in schools and in the wider community.

Its corporate objectives are to:

1. Demonstrate the distinctive role of physical education in children’s and young people’s development and achievements;

2. Establish and sustain physical education at the heart of school life and whole-school development, through support for high quality learning and teaching; research; ethical leadership; and politically informed advocacy and representation;

3. Raise awareness of physical education’s contributions to public health and well-being;

4. Play a leading role in the development of a workforce with the skills and qualities required to assure high quality physical education and sport in schools and in the wider community;

5. Provide high quality, professional, sustainable services for its members and partners.

afPE works closely with key partner organisations at national level, including the national government departments for education and skills; their agencies for curriculum development, quality improvement and teacher supply and development; and other non-governmental organisations, notably sports coach and the Youth Sport Trust.

afPE has committed to the following areas of strategic development for the period 2007-9:

  • Improving the coverage and quality of physical education in primary schools, including the time allocated to initial teacher training for future primary school teachers.
  • Establishing a clear message for the role of physical education in promoting health through physical activity in schools.
  • Improving the skills of the workforce delivering physical education and school sport.

[1] On 7th July 2005, members of the British Association of Advisers and Lecturers in Physical Education and the Physical Education Association of the voted at their respective AGMs to dissolve, in favour of creating a new single physical education subject association. The Association for Physical Education was launched in the on 23rd March 2006 by Lord Adonis, Minister of State for School Standards.
