Unite members in Scottish Local Government to strike again and bring Scotland to a “standstill”
9 September 2008
24 hour stoppage announced for Wednesday, 24th September 2008.
Unite members in local authorities across Scotland are to take further industrial action in their fight to secure a living wage.
They will join with 150,000 fellow trade unionists from the GMB and Unison unions, workers from across the public sector, on a 24 hour stoppage which is set to bring Scotland to a standstill.
According to Jimmy Farrelly, a senior official in Unite: “Unite members are furious with the actions of Scottish employers and council leaders who seem determined to take an unnecessarily hard-line on pay with some of the poorest and lowest paid workers in Scotland.
“The employers should be ashamed of their record on low pay in Scottish local government and by their recent actions in reaffirming their original pay offer of 2.5 percent. With inflation now running at 5 percent our members are struggling to make their low wages stretch any further.
“The employers’ hard-hearted stance has only exacerbated an already strained situation and strengthened the resolve of our members to win a living wage.”
Unite represents 20,000 members in Scottish local government, working in refuse collection, schools, social care, leisure and recreation and road maintenance services.
