The new Diploma in Public Services looks to stakeholders for feedback

13 December 2007

Employers in Public Services are to have their say on an exciting new qualification aimed at young people.

The Diploma in Public Services is part of the government's wider 14-19 reform programme to encourage young people to continue learning for longer, and is scheduled to be delivered by schools, colleges and employers from September 2010.

Over the past eight months, the group behind the development of the new qualification, the Diploma Development Partnership (DDP), has been consulting with employers and higher education institutions on the principal learning component of the diploma. It is this part of the diploma that will give young people the knowledge and skills that is specific to the sector.

"Starting out in the business world can be tough, but Diplomas provide young people with the knowledge and skills to get a head start." Sir Alan Jones, Chairman Emeritus of Toyota Manufacturing UK

"Diplomas increase the range of qualifications that young people have available to them. Young people studying the Diploma will gain skills that are valuable for university and for their future." Professor Michael Arthur, Vice Chancellor, University of Leeds.

The DDP, which is led by Skills for Justice, the Sector Skills Council for the Justice sector, is hosting five regional consultation events during January, to obtain feedback on the current look of the Diploma in Public Services.

Public sector employers, higher and further education providers, schools, awarding bodies, and local authorities are all looking to attend these events, which are taking place in London, Bristol, Birmingham, Nottingham, and York.

There are still places available for some of the events and all major stakeholders are welcomed to contribute to the day. Those interested in attending can book their free place at www.publicservicesdiploma.co.uk.
