Social Care Is In Crisis
5 June 2008
Help the Aged welcomes Ivan Lewis' comments
Help the Aged today responded to Care Services minister Ivan Lewis' comment that caring for older people was one of the greatest challenges facing the country.
Director of Policy Paul Cann said:
"There is a growing consensus that the social care system is in crisis. Under-funded and misunderstood - the care and support system in the UK has become a distress service, meeting only the needs of the poorest and most debilitated.
"Too many older people pay high prices for what are often poor quality services, or go without care at all.
"The care debate has the potential to shape and improve lives for generations of people. Whether it will depends on how ambitious we all are, how bold the Government is prepared to be, and crucially whether they are prepared to deliver on their fine rhetoric.
"Ivan Lewis is right to recognise that caring for our older people is of the highest importance to society."
