'Scrap the exam boards and replace with one on the public sector' says the NASUWT

    20 November 2009

Commenting on the Ofqual report on exam based grading, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers' union, said:

"Once again a perfectly straightforward report is being used to undermine the achievements of teachers and pupils.

"The report does not claim that the higher exam grades have become easier to attain overtime.

"The report points to variability in practice between awarding bodies.

"This is the consequence of the bizarre system of having national qualifications administered by competing exam boards, none of which are in the Public Sector and some of which make a profit at tax-payers' expense.

"Rather than criticising teachers and pupils, save money and build confidence in the system by scrapping all the boards and replacing them with one which operates in the Public Sector."
