Press Release
SATS Chaos
4 July 2008
Commenting on the statement from the National Assessment Agency, Christine Blower, Acting General Secretary of the National Union of Teachers, Europe’s largest teaching union said;
"The only thing Ed Balls could do is delay the delivery of test results to schools. The catalogue of confusion and errors on the part of the contractor has left him with no choice.
"However, solving this particular shambolic episode in the history of the current testing system won't solve its inherent fundamental flaws. Enormous sums of money are wasted on high-stakes tests every year. They contribute nothing to pupils' learning and narrow the curriculum. The NUT has long argued for the abolition of Sats.
“We even have a situation now where various agencies are blaming each other.
"Although I am relieved to learn from Ofqual that marking quality is not the issue, if there is one lesson that Ed Balls should learn today, it is that he should institute an independent, fundamental review of England's school testing arrangements."
