Press Release
Primary Maths Review
17 June 2008
Commenting on the interim report of the Primary Maths Review, Christine Blower, Acting General Secretary of the National Union of Teachers, Europe’s largest teaching union said:
“Much of the Williams’ interim report is both eminently sensible and has major resource implications for primary schools and early years settings.
“Extra resources should be guaranteed for posts for maths specialists in small primary schools. Indeed mathematics tuition carried out by qualified teachers should be guaranteed for all children who need it.
“All early years settings, whether in the maintained sector or in the private or voluntary sectors should have qualified teachers. Finally continuing professional development , in mathematics, or in any other subject for that matter, cannot just be added to the end of the school day. It should be part of a planned strategy which includes within school day provision and sabbaticals”.
