Physiotherapist struck off for incompetence and misconduct
Wednesday, July 30 2008
Physiotherapist, Arul V Rathina has been struck of the HPC Register for his lack of competence and misconduct while employed by Devon Primary Care Trust at Totnes Community Hospital.
A panel of the HPC Conduct and Competence Committee heard how Mr Rathina was unable to demonstrate attainment of the level of competence expected of a physiotherapist. Mr Rathina failed to arrange and attend regular clinical supervision, and contrary to instructions, undertook an unsupervised treatment of a patient with neurological damage. He then administered inappropriate treatment that put the patient at risk.
Mr Rathina did not attend the hearing and did not engage in the fitness to practise process.
Panel Chair, Mr Gordon Sutehall, commented: "On the basis of our findings of fact and our conclusions we are satisfied that Mr Rathina's actions and behaviour constituted misconduct and lack of competence. Misconduct in the sense of failing to follow instructions on some occasions, with reckless disregard for patient safety. Lack of competence in that he consistently fell far below accepted professional standards."
The panel decided to strike Arul Rathina off the Register.
