Pay cap on public sector pay - Unite's comment
5 June 2008
Today (Thursday 5th June) Derek Simpson, Joint General Secretary of Unite, branded the governments 2% pay cap on public sector pay 'a disgrace' at Unite's industrial conference's in Brighton.
Unite the union, which has 250,000 members working in the public sector, is supporting the TUC's Speak Up For Public Services lobby this coming Monday (9th June).
With rises in house prices, food and fuel, those working in the public sector will be getting a pay cut in real terms.
Gail Cartmail, Unite Assistant General Secretary, said: "Our members work hard to keep this country up and running. They should not be forced to take the blame for inflation. Unless the government want to be facing a recruitment and retention crisis within the public sector they need to treat these workers with the respect they deserve."
