Nuclear Industry backs repository plans
2 November 2007
THE NUCLEAR INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION (NIA) today submitted its response to the government consultation on managing radioactive waste safely with a clear message that active engagement with local communities is crucial.
Backing the plans for deep geological repository, the NIA said that it was in “accord with established international practice”. They stated further that “open dialogue with local communities and their active participation and engagement in the decision making process is essential”.
Keith Parker, NIA chief executive, said that continued progress on long-term waste management was needed. “The UK has legacy waste from civil and military programmes that needs to be dealt with regardless of whether we go ahead with new nuclear stations. It is vital that we continue to take steps towards a permanent storage option, and this consultation is a central part of that process”.
