Press Release

NEW BOSS FOR WELSH BUILDERS GROUP

15 April 2007

The National Federation of Builders (NFB) in Wales is stepping up its activity in support of small to medium-sized contractors with the appointment of Simon Lovell Jones.

Simon, aged 39 will lead NFB Wales’ Cardiff-based office - providing advice and specialist business services to over 160 contractors and builders across the country.

His first role will be to promote the position of local SME contractors on the issue of public sector procurement and framework agreements - the process whereby local authorities bundle smaller building projects into a handful of larger contracts.

The Federation is researching this issue currently, and Simon is looking to work closely with AMs and local government to promote SMEs in construction.

Simon said: “Running a successful contracting business isn’t getting any easier and it’s our job to provide fast, efficient and meaningful support with the day-to-day issues and policies, allowing our members to concentrate on growth and expansion.

“The NFB has recently been active fighting on behalf of building firms in relation to delays caused by poor performing utility firms. The Federation has generated a great deal of success in this area and we’re confident that that same will be true concerning procurement.”

Simon joins from the Arts Council for Wales. In his role as regional director for Mid and West Wales, he was responsible for developing and funding arts initiatives throughout the region - working closely with Assembly Members and  Portfolio holders within local authorities.

Julia Evans, chief executive at the NFB, said: “We’re investing heavily in the right people to help our Federation move forward with confidence and deliver the results expected from our members.

“The Welsh office of the NFB has built up close links with AMs and local authorities to ensure that the interests of small to medium-sized construction firms are heard and understood. Simon is extremely well qualified, and will build on the good work done by the Federation over the last few years.”

Nationally, the NFB represents some 2,000 builders and contractors in across England and Wales.

In addition to providing specialist legal, insurance and taxation support, the Federation lobbies local, national and European government on a range of issues to sustain positive trading conditions for members.
