NCVO welcomes new Charity Commission guidance on campaigning

5 March 2008

The National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) has welcomed the Charity Commission’s new guidance on campaigning. The guidance not only provides welcome clarification of the law in relation to campaigning and political activity, but also recognises that such activities can be an appropriate and effective means of furthering a charity’s mission.

Stuart Etherington, Chief Executive of NCVO said:

'Campaigning is crucial part of many charities’ activities, enabling them to make a real difference to people’s lives and to society. Until now there has been considerable confusion about what charities legally can and cannot do. As a consequence many have been overly cautious in their approach to campaigning. This new guidance will enable charities to campaign with confidence in furtherance of their cause.'
