Press Release

Major route improvement works affect May Day Bank Holiday weekend services

25 April 2008

No Virgin services to or from London Euston from Saturday 3 to Monday 5 May inclusive

There are no Virgin Trains services to or from London Euston station throughout Saturday, Sunday, and Monday 3,4 and 5 May. This is due to continuing work in the Rugby area to re-design the entire track layout through the busy junctions north and south of the station.

Services will only run as far south as either Coventry or Birmingham International before returning north.  Passengers travelling to London Euston will need to change in Birmingham and use either Chiltern Railways from Moor Street station to London Marylebone or CrossCountry services from New Street, changing to First Great Western at Reading for London Paddington.

Other routes that offer alternative ways of getting to and from London include National Express East Coast between Glasgow/Edinburgh and London Kings Cross, and East Midlands Trains between Manchester and London St Pancras changing at Sheffield.  Passengers with Open tickets, Savers and season tickets who would normally use Virgin Trains can use any of the other routes mentioned above.

Over the three days there will be a replacement coach service for local passengers operating between Coventry and Northampton with a stop at Rugby.

For passengers wishing to travel from Rugby to London a coach service will operate to and from Kettering where connections can be made with East Midlands Trains to and from St Pancras International.

Milton Keynes and Watford Junction passengers wishing to travel north will be provided with replacement coaches to Birmingham International and High Wycombe respectively.  Passengers who would normally use Virgin services to and from Nuneaton, Tamworth and Lichfield will need to travel via Birmingham New Street.

There is also route improvement work taking place between Lockerbie and Edinburgh on Saturday 3 May and between Stoke-on-Trent and Macclesfield on Sunday 4 May.  All stations will remain open for business but in some cases passengers will have to use replacement coaches to connect into the nearest available train service.

From 1900 Saturday 3 May until 1500 Sunday 4 May the line between Preston and Carlisle will be closed with trains replaced by connecting coaches.
