Keen to go Green? Visit the Camden Green Fair on 1st June

23/05/2008

Want to go green but don’t know where to start?  You could find everything you need to know at the Camden Green Fair. Now in its 17th year, the UK’s largest free environmental event, in partnership with Camden Council, will be held in Regent’s Park from 12noon to 7pm, on Sunday 1st June.

A fun day with a serious message behind it, there will be lots to see and do.  Explore the Green House for practical tips on making your home and garden more sustainable, or visit the brand new green science zone. Have a go at some amazing experiments while learning about the science behind climate change – but watch out for some explosions! Kids can also enjoy the return of the famous solar-powered circus, after a spot of face-painting or go-karting.

For music lovers, there will be performances from local bands as well as world music and dance, on two stages powered by the wind and the sun. Fancy a dance yourself? Then take part in the Fairtrade Tea Dance, and perhaps be a record breaker! Guinness World Records will be there for an attempt to create the world’s biggest tea dance.

Bikefest is back and will tell you all you need to know about cycle safety. Dr Bike will also be on hand offering free basic bike maintenance, and event sponsor, Trek Bikes, will be giving away a bike from their brand new 2009 range.

Stroll through the green market for fair trade goods, and arts and crafts, and finish off with some sustainably produced organic food and drink.

Around 25,000 people are expected to visit the event. Volunteers are needed to help out on the day.  Potential volunteers should contact Eloise on volunteers@camdengreenfair.org.uk.

Camden Council is one of the main partners of the event.  Cllr Mike Greene, Executive Member for Environment, Camden Council said:  “Camden Green Fair is a great day out for all the family. It’s a truly hands-on event where people can see for themselves how small changes can make a big difference.  Camden faces huge challenges in the future of population growth and environmental issues, and Camden Green Fair is one way of showing how we can all work together.”

At the Green Fair Camden Council will be launching its ‘Small steps, big difference’ climate change campaign which ties in to a national drive to reduce greenhouse emissions.

Camden Council Leader, Cllr Keith Moffitt, said: “Tackling climate change is one of the most important priorities for Camden Council, and we are making it easier for residents and local businesses to do their bit.  By taking small green steps in the way we live, work and travel we can make a big difference.

“Simple steps like switching off lights and appliances when not in use, walking or cycling to work, and reducing, reusing and recycling our waste is how we will make a real positive change.

“If all of us can make lots of these steps then together we will make a huge difference.  I’m excited to see Camden becoming a leading low carbon and low waste borough.”

Council staff will be on hand at the fair providing free advice and information on how the Council can support residents who are keen to go green, and the Leader of Camden Council, Cllr Keith Moffitt, will be available for interviews on the day.
