JOHN REDWOOD MP TO DELIVER KEYNOTE SPEECH AT ICSA COMPANY SECRETARIES CONFERENCE

John Redwood, MP for Wokingham and Chairman of the Economic Competitiveness Policy Group will be the keynote speaker at the ICSA Company Secretaries Conference and Exhibition, to be held on Thursday 4 October in London. John Redwood’s speech will focus on the long-term effects of over-regulation on the UK’s competitiveness.

Sarah Montague, journalist and presenter on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme will be chairing this year’s conference. A major focus will be the Companies Act 2006 which reaches its second stage of implementation in October. Geoff Dart, Director of Corporate Law and Governance at the Department of Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) will be giving a keynote speech on the latest developments on the implementation of the Act and how companies can ensure they are prepared for the changes that lie ahead. Tom Smith, Customer Delivery Director, Companies House will be outlining the adjustments that are being made to forms and practices at Companies House in light of the new legislation.

Mark O’Sullivan, Senior Manager, Corporate Reporting, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and Sallie Cooke Pilot, Director of Corporate Reporting, Black Sun will be giving a detailed analysis of narrative reporting from a regulatory perspective.

Sally Dewar, Director, Capital Markets Sector, Financial Services Authority (FSA) and Ben Mathews, Company Secretary and Global Head of Secretarial Services, Rio Tinto  will be discussing the amendments to the Listing, Prospectus and Disclosure and Transparency Rules that are effective from 6 August and the impact of the changes to the Model Code from an issuer’s perspective.

Richard Sykes, Partner, PwC will be examining how company secretaries can support their boards more effectively by building a robust system of governance, regulation and compliance and Rory Sullivan, Head of Investor Responsibility, Insight Investment will highlight the issues that companies need to be aware of when considering their corporate social responsibility.

A discussion on what investors will be looking for at AGMs and in company disclosures will be led by Stephen Haddrill, Director General, Association of British Insurers (ABI), Alan MacDougall, Managing Director, Pensions Investment Research Consultants (PIRC) and Anita Skipper, Head of Corporate Governance, Morley. James Palmer, Partner, Corporate, Herbert Smith will be looking ahead to the 2008 AGM, exploring what changes need to be made to the articles of association and providing a checklist for company secretaries.
