London, 7 May 2008: This September, hundreds of delegates from across the globe will converge on Brighton for the first World Social Marketing Conference and Exhibition.

This groundbreaking event - taking place at the Hilton Brighton Metropole, 29 - 30 September 2008 - will be opened by Professor Philip Kotler, the social marketing pioneer who has led the development and application of social marketing techniques for over 30 years.

Organised by the UK’s National Social Marketing Centre, in association with The Chartered Institute of Marketing, and in partnership with the University of Lethbridge (Canada), and the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the conference will provide a forum for shared learning across the social marketing industry - from practitioners to academics and public sector to corporate sector.

Over the last ten years, social marketing has developed as a key tool for governments and other organisations aiming to influence positive social change.  There is growing evidence demonstrating how it can improve and enhance the impact and effectiveness of commercial sector techniques and approaches.

David Thorp, Director of Research and Information at The Chartered Institute of Marketing said: “We believe that social marketing is set to assume a vitally important role in best marketing practice.  We are delighted to have the opportunity to demonstrate our support for this conference and for all social marketing practitioners.  We feel that social marketing is a tremendously important aspect of responsible marketing.”

The event will cover key social marketing streams - academic, theory, and policy and practical application - and offer insight into some of the world’s most successful health, environment and community engagement initiatives.

Patrick Ladbury, Programme Manager at the National Social Marketing Centre added: “The World Social Marketing Conference is one of the most significant events for social marketing professionals across the globe.  Behavioural challenges lie at the heart of many of the issues facing governments and organisations and this conference is an opportunity for practitioners in social marketing from around the world to come together to discuss the key issues and share ideas on how to address them.”

An amazing range of social marketers will be speaking at the conference, including Nancy Lee, Bill Smith and Jay Bernhardt, the likes of whom are rarely seen at events in the UK.
