HPC welcomes new physiotherapist Council member

14 November 2006

The Health Professions Council (HPC) is pleased to announce a new member to the Council. Professor Graham Smith will take his place at the first official Council meeting on the 14th December 2006, following his appointment as the physiotherapist member of the Council on 26th October.

The Council is responsible for developing strategies and policies. It consists of twenty-six members: one Council member from each of the professions, twelve lay members, and a president.

Graham qualified as a physiotherapist in 1977 and as a teacher of physiotherapy in 1982. He is currently an independent rehabilitation and sports injury consultant based in Glasgow. He has extensive experience in the treatment and management of injuries at all levels of the sporting spectrum and has worked with Glasgow Rangers FC, the British Olympic team in Nagano and numerous national representative sporting squads. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and a visiting Professor at the University of Teesside. He combines his clinical and consultancy roles with lecturing commitments both nationally and internationally.

Graham Smith said “I am delighted to be elected by physiotherapists as a member of the Council. I look forward to working along side other Council members, facing new challenges and being part of the development of HPC’s policies and strategies.

Anna van der Gaag, The President of the Council, said “The input of our registrant Council members is vital to our success. I would like to welcome Graham to the Council and look forward to working with him.”
