Health Professions Council meeting agenda summary

Revised Strategy

Following the government's White Paper on the regulation of healthcare professionals in the 21st century, the Council amended its strategy to respond to the recommendations in the White Paper.

Standards of Proficiency for Psychologists

The Council decided to set up a Professional Liaison Group (a working party) to draft Standards of Proficiency for Psychologists, as the White Paper proposed that the Council should become the regulator for this profession.

Continuing Fitness to Practise

The Council decided to establish a Professional Liaison Group to explore issues around revalidation and continuing fitness to practise, which arose following the White Paper.

Professional Qualifications Directive

The Government is consulting on regulations to implement the professional qualifications directive, which enables professionals to have access to and pursue their profession in other European member states. The Council agreed its response to the consultation.

Annual Report 2006-7

The Council received its draft annual report for 2006-7. The report is due to be published in the autumn.

Governance discussion

The Council considered a number of issues arising out of the White Paper which will affect the future governance of Council, such as its future size, composition and the process for recruiting members.

Council Members as Registration Assessors

Following a decision taken at the May 2007 Council meeting that Council members should no longer act as visitors, Council decided that Council members should no longer act as registration assessors unless there were exceptional circumstances.
