Gap In Social Care Turning Into A Gulf Government Must Commit To More Funding
9 June 2008
Help the Aged has today responded to the first survey of eligibility criteria for the new financial year. The Local Government Association has found that councils increasingly provide help with basic daily tasks, such as washing and eating, only to those with the greatest need.
Paul Cann, Director of Policy at Help the Aged said:
"There is a growing crisis in social care, and the gap between need and provision is rapidly turning into a gulf.
"Dwindling budgets are forcing greater rationing of social care services than ever before, leaving many of society's most vulnerable to fend for themselves.
"These figures are the latest to show the urgent need for radical reform. The current system is failing and so must be transformed into one that is personalised, easy to understand and accessible - with a fair and sustainable funding settlement.
"Help the Aged, along with Counsel and Care and Carers UK, are part of the Right care Right deal campaign - a high profile campaign calling for a new settlement for social care in England. The Government's next spending review must include a commitment to greater funding for social care."
