Free design course launched to help women advance their career in fashion design
11 June 2007
Female fashion designers are being encouraged to take advantage of a free, new training course aimed at giving them additional skills with which to advance their career.
Skillfast-UK, the Sector Skills Council for fashion, has teamed up with the Designer Forum (part of EMTEX Ltd) in Nottingham, and the Women & Work Sector Pathways Initiative (WWSPI), to offer the course, which is part of a £10 million initiative designed to boost the prospects of women in various industries.
The intensive six-day course is aimed at women who have set up their own fashion design business in the last 18 months, and are looking to take the next business step, or graduates who are in their first fashion design job and need to fast- track their specialist skills.
The course provides support in the key areas of product development, computer aided design (CAD), sales and marketing, working with buyers and managing production. Delegates will also be taught how to improve their presentation and time management skills.
Chief Executive at Skillfast-UK, Linda Florance said: "Fashion is a tough competitive market, and only those with technical and commercial skills survive.
This new design course will give delegates the practical support they need to develop their career in the industry. It will also give them a forum to network with their peers. Places are free but strictly limited, so we are advising anybody who is interested in embarking on the course to get in touch as soon as possible."
The course will run on Saturday 9 July to Thursday 14 July, Monday 23 July to Saturday 28 July 2007 and Monday 6 August to Saturday 11 August at The Designer Forum, 69-73 Parliament Street, Nottingham.
There will be a maximum of 15 delegates on each course, which is delivered through a mixture of presentations and practical exercises. Small learning groups mean that wherever possible the content of the course will be tailored to meet the specific needs of each graduate.
Women wishing to register their interest should visit www.skillfast-uk and click on the link to Women & Work (Design) or telephone Vicky Emery at the Designer Forum on 0115 911 5339.
