Ethics matters to engineers

The Royal Academy of Engineering, which promtes engineering and technological welfare of the country, will publish a new Statement of Ethical Principles for engineers on Wednesday 13 June, marking the event with a debate on the importance of ethics in the day-to-day practice of engineering, chaired by Professor John Uff CBE QC FREng.
John Armitt CBE, Chief Executive of Network Rail and a Fellow of the Academy, will look at what employers and the public expect from engineers and how ethical arguments affect engineers' work. John Armitt CBE will argue that "Engineers often found themselves in controversial areas where final decisions were often a reflection of current societal values and political views. Whilst they must be willing to recognise both sides of a debate they must also be prepared to state a position if they are to carry weight in the eyes of both the public and the politician."
Sara Parkin OBE, Founder Director of Forum for the Future, will reflect on how engineers identify and apply ethical principles in the 21st century, which will be dominated by how successful we are in achieving a radical reduction in energy and material use. She will offer a 'to do' list for engineers for the next decade.
