Domestic Violence

13 June 2008

Commenting on the Home Affairs Select Committee’s report, Christine Blower, Acting General Secretary of the National Union of Teachers, Europe’s largest teaching union said;

“There is every argument for schools to be given the time and space to teach about bullying and abuse which occurs within families, and its effect on children in schools and society at large.

“The Home Affairs Select Committee needs to be careful, however, about the way it makes recommendations for schools. The NUT’s own guidance, ‘Silence Is Not Always Golden’ - about the impact of domestic violence on children - has had a tremendously positive impact on schools since its Parliamentary launch in 2005. It has given practical and sensitive guidance to teachers to use in their day to day work with children and young people.

“The idea of schools being ‘forced’ to address this issue is not an appropriate suggestion. Schools, teachers and Government need to work in partnership on expanding guidance which will help children and families who are affected by or appear to suffer such abuse.”
