Celebrating local produce

14/04/08

The best of Northamptonshire's produce will be on sale in the town centre as Northampton's historic Market Square will begin hosting a monthly farmers' market.

The first farmers' market of 2008 will be held on Thursday 17 April and will be opened by television and stage star Lesley Joseph. The market will give shoppers the chance to buy locally produced goods directly from the producer.

From 9.30am to 1.30pm 18 stalls will join the Market Square offering a wide range of goods and products. At the first farmers' market there will be stalls offering freshly cooked and prepared meats, organic breads, freshly baked cakes, brewers offering real ale and stouts, goats' cheese and milk, authentic Italian sauces and much more. Everything on sale will have been grown locally or made from locally sourced ingredients.

Councillor Richard Church, Northampton Borough Council cabinet member for the market said: "The Market Square is the heart of the town, so where better to display the best locally produced goods? This is a chance for shoppers to buy freshly made products directly from the source. We have a fantastic range of goods on offer that really show the diversity of this area."

A farmers' market will be held in the Market Square on the third Thursday of every month. For more information about what is going on or to book a stall for future events please contact the borough council's markets office on 01604 635257 or email markets@northampton.gov.uk
