Caring for carers – Gordon Brown hosts reception to recognise unsung heroes

Just one month after the Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association issued a request to the next Prime Minister to remember people with MND, the Association’s Care Information Manager will be meeting Gordon Brown during a Carers Week reception today.

Gordon Brown will be hosting the reception held at 11 Downing Street which will focus on the progress made by carers, much of it as a direct result of campaigning and lobbying by carers and carers' organisations. Carers UK said the reception will also be an opportunity to raise awareness of the needs of carers and improve services and support.

Sharon Schillerstrom, Care Information Manager said: “Many carers I speak to are so involved in caring for someone else that they forget to care about themselves. This is why it’s vital the role of the carer is supported by the Government. Caring for someone is not easy and many carers suffer from high levels of stress, depression and feelings of despair.

“Our mission is to enable everyone with MND to receive the best care, achieve the highest quality of life possible and die with dignity. The role of carers is central to that. I am delighted to be here and on behalf of the MND Association I wish Carers UK success for Carers Week.”
