BMJ response line - LONDON FIRST
In response to the British Medical Journal report demonstrating the ‘modest benefit’ of Congestion Charging to Londoners’ life expectancy, a spokesman from business organisation London First said:
“Congestion causes air pollution and ill health in London. Gridlock jeopardises the economy by making London an unattractive place to live and work. The central London Congestion Charge delivered immediate benefits in a small part of the capital. But as 90% of congestion is outside the zone, it has to be the forerunner of sophisticated road pricing for London, spreading those benefits across the capital. In the upcoming Mayoral contest, voters will want to know which candidate has the wellbeing of London and Londoners in mind and the best policies to tackle congestion.”
